Day 2. Sofia – Rila Monastery – Rupite – Melnik
Our day begins with a scenic transfer from Sofia to the iconic Rila Monastery, the largest and most significant monastery in Bulgaria. Serving as a powerful symbol of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, this historic site was founded in the 10th century and underwent reconstruction in the 13th and 14th centuries. As one of Europe’s oldest monasteries, it has proudly held a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1983. Behind its imposing 20-meter-high walls lie magnificent monastery buildings, a beautiful church, and a chapel adorned with priceless murals.
Our next destination is the mystical Rupite, a place deeply revered by Bulgarians and many beyond. Often called “Vanga’s place,” Rupite is linked to the renowned 20th-century Bulgarian prophetess Vanga. As a child, Vanga lost her sight during a strange storm but gained an extraordinary inner vision. Throughout her life, she provided comfort and guidance to tens of thousands—including heads of state—who queued outside her humble cottage at the base of a dormant volcano. Today, visitors can explore a church, a museum, and a serene park surrounding her former home. Just steps away, natural hot mineral springs offer a unique experience, allowing guests to bathe in rustic pools carved directly into the earth.
Our adventure continues to Melnik, Bulgaria’s smallest town, renowned for its exceptional red wine and striking natural sandstone pyramids. Strolling through Melnik’s narrow cobblestone streets, we’ll marvel at the town’s charming architecture and indulge in a glass (or two) of the distinctive ruby-red wine produced exclusively in this picturesque corner of Europe.
Day 3. Melnik – Ribnovo – Dobrinishte
Our day begins with a visit to the Kordopul House, a stunning example of Bulgarian Revival architecture. Once owned by a prominent wine merchant, this historic house boasts a rich legacy. In the early 20th century, the merchant’s exquisite local wine earned accolades at world exhibitions in France and America. Beneath the house lies a vast cave, carved directly into the mountain rock, where wine barrels were traditionally stored—a testament to the deep-rooted winemaking heritage of the region.
From here, we’ll embark on a scenic drive through the picturesque Pirin and Rhodopi Mountains, regions steeped in ancient lore. These majestic landscapes are believed to be the birthplace of legendary heroes and the sacred grounds where the Thracian tribes once celebrated their religious rituals.
The highlight of our day is an unforgettable visit to the village of Ribnovo, a vibrant community perched on the edge of the Rhodopes with sweeping views of the Pirin mountains. Ribnovo is a world of its own—a small, close-knit society that lives by age-old traditions and preserves a unique cultural heritage.
We invite you to dive deep into this extraordinary Bulgarian culture, where ancient customs and a distinctive way of life will captivate your mind and senses. Experience the enchanting wedding ritual of Ribnovo, a centuries-old pagan tradition considered one-of-a-kind globally. This living example of intangible cultural heritage is something the local community hopes to see recognized by UNESCO.
During your visit, you’ll have the chance to savor traditional cuisine, witness the beautiful “Gelina” bride dressing ceremony, and walk among the welcoming locals. Embrace the authenticity of Ribnovo as you share meals, exchange stories, and gain firsthand insights into a tradition that has been carefully preserved for generations.
In the evening, we will travel to Dobrinishte, where we’ll spend the night in a cozy local hotel. If time allows, we’ll unwind in Dobrinishte’s renowned hot mineral pools and baths, adding a touch of relaxation to our culturally rich day.

This site offers a rare glimpse into the mystical world of ancient Thracian culture.
From the valley, we’ll ascend to the summit of Buzludzha Mountain, home to one of Bulgaria’s most striking landmarks—the monumental Buzludzha building, a symbol of the country’s socialist era. Often compared to a spaceship for its futuristic design, this imposing structure remains abandoned, and while entry is not permitted, the view from the top is nothing short of spectacular. Standing at the heart of Bulgaria, you’ll feel as if you are floating above the landscape, enjoying vast, unobstructed views that stretch across much of the country—like being on an airplane without walls.
Weather permitting, our adventure will continue along the mountain ridge, leading us past the historic Shipka Pass. Here stands the Shipka Monument of Freedom, a powerful tribute to those who gave their lives during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, playing a pivotal role in Bulgaria’s Liberation. The monument’s solemn beauty and the dramatic history it represents make this a deeply moving experience.
Our final destination for the day is Etara, an enchanting open-air ethnographic museum. As we wander through this living museum, you’ll step back in time to discover the everyday life of Bulgarians through the centuries. From traditional crafts and architecture to cultural practices, Etara offers an immersive glimpse into the rich heritage and enduring spirit of the local people.
