If you’re a passionate nature enthusiast and love uncovering its hidden wonders, then we have a truly fascinating destination for you today – the remarkable rock formation known as “The Wedding.”

Where is “The Wedding” Located?
This whimsical geological phenomenon is nestled in one of the most picturesque parts of the Rhodope Mountains – the Dabrash Ridge. It lies within the territory of the village Osenovo, in the Blagoevgrad Province, just about 29 kilometers from Bansko, Bulgaria’s largest ski resort.
What Makes “The Wedding” So Unique?
Spanning over an area of 31.1 hectares, this natural site is a sprawling complex of bizarrely shaped rock formations. These rocks come in all shapes and sizes, many of which eerily resemble human and animal figures.
These forms were not sculpted by hand, but rather by nature itself. Over centuries, the wind and erosion wore down the limestone rocks, carving them into the surreal shapes we see today.
Why Is It Called “The Wedding”?
Locals lovingly refer to the rock formation as either “The Wedding” or “The People” – a name steeped in legend and passed down through generations.
According to the tale, many years ago, two young lovers from the nearby villages of Osenovo and Gostun fell in love and decided to get married. On the day of the wedding, the bridal procession set off from Osenovo toward Gostun to bring back the bride.
The Curse That Turned People to Stone
Halfway through the journey, the groom’s mother suddenly remembered she had forgotten something important. She asked the wedding party to wait while she returned to get it. However, they ignored her request and continued on their way.
When she came back and saw that no one had waited for her, she was overwhelmed with rage. In her fury, she uttered a bitter curse upon all of them. As soon as the curse left her lips, everyone in the wedding party was turned to stone – immortalized forever in the rocky terrain.
A Mythical Sight Worth Visiting
Today, visitors can wander through the area and let their imaginations run wild, trying to spot bridesmaids, musicians, and wedding guests frozen in stone. The magical atmosphere and the legend behind it make “The Wedding” a must-see natural and cultural site in Bulgaria.
Whether you’re into folklore, geology, or simply breathtaking scenery, this hidden gem in the Rhodopes promises an experience that’s both mystical and memorable.
