From the Past to the Present
Following the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878, Enina became part of the semi-autonomous Eastern Rumelia under the Treaty of Berlin. However, with the unification of Bulgaria in 1885, the village officially joined the newly formed Bulgarian Principality, marking a new chapter in its history.
The Legend of Yana and the Birth of Enina
Enina’s charm lies not only in its scenic beauty but also in the timeless legend of Yana—a story that intertwines love, nature, and the soul of the village.
Yana was said to be the most beautiful maiden in her village. Orphaned at a young age, she bore the responsibility of earning her livelihood. Every morning, Yana would lead her goats to graze, her melodic songs filling the valley. As the sun set behind the golden peaks, she would guide them back, her voice echoing across the hills.
People adored her. Yana’s kindness and grace made the world seem brighter wherever she went. Among those captivated by her was a young man—humble in means but gifted with an extraordinary craft. In his hands, wood transformed into breathtaking creations. Despite his love for Yana, he kept his feelings hidden, stealing only brief glances her way.
A Fateful Encounter
One day, one of Yana’s youngest goats went missing. Determined to find it, she ventured deep into the mountains. Though she knew every corner of the land, this time, Yana discovered a mesmerizing place she had never seen before. Behind her, the majestic Balkan Mountains stood tall, while before her stretched the welcoming embrace of the fragrant valley. It was here that she felt she had found her true home.
Upon returning to the village, Yana bid farewell to her people, resolving to make the enchanting spot her new abode. But as she left, the young man followed her, unable to part with the one he loved most. Together, they built their home at the spot revealed by the goat. The villagers, missing their beloved Yana and the craftsman, began to settle around them. Over time, their home grew into the village we now know as Enina.
Cultural Treasure: The Enina Apostle
Enina holds a precious place in Slavic history as the site where the oldest known Slavic transcription of the Apostolic texts—the Enina Apostle—was discovered. This invaluable manuscript stands as a testament to the village’s cultural and historical significance.
Enina in Modern History
During the Balkan Wars of 1912, Enina contributed to Bulgaria’s fight for freedom. A single villager volunteered to join the Macedonian-Adrianopolitan militia, embodying the spirit of courage and patriotism that has long defined the people of this village.
