Voneshta Voda: Gem in Northern Bulgaria

Voneshta Voda, a quaint village nestled in Northern Bulgaria, is part of the Veliko Tarnovo Municipality, within the Veliko Tarnovo Province. The village’s name, intriguingly, is derived from its distinctive mineral water, which is notorious for its strong hydrogen sulfide odor. But don’t let that dissuade you – Voneshta Voda is also a renowned balneological resort, offering therapeutic experiences to its visitors.

Where the Mountains Meet Serenity

Positioned in a mountainous region, Voneshta Voda is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Central Balkan Mountains‘ northern foothills. It lies about 28 kilometers south of the historic town of Veliko Tarnovo and approximately 17 kilometers east of the charming town of Tryavna. The village is conveniently situated along the main road from Veliko Tarnovo to Nova Zagora, passing through the Republic Pass, also known as Hainboaz. Elevation varies, with the village itself standing at over 351 meters above sea level, while the resort area climbs to an altitude of 500 meters. The climate here is moderately continental, characterized by a gentle ebb and flow of temperature, avoiding extreme highs or lows.

The Village and Its Surroundings

Beyond its central hub, Voneshta Voda extends into four smaller hamlets, known locally as “kolibi.” The largest of these is Grŭtsite, located 2 kilometers southeast of the village center, accessible by a well-maintained road. Since 1974, the village has expanded to include the kolibi of Grŭnevtsi. Grŭnevtsi itself splits into two—Dolni Grŭnevtsi, just 1.2 kilometers away, and Gorni Grŭnevtsi, 2.5 kilometers to the north. Meanwhile, Radnevtsi lies 2.8 kilometers northwest, on the right-hand side of the road leading to Tryavna.
